Clarification concerning the closure of banks' branches

March 16 2020

Following the statement of the Minister of Finance concerning the measures taken by the Association of Banks in Lebanon in order to facilitate the activity of the banking sector during the general mobilization, the ABL would like to emphasize that these decisions taken today are completely compatible with the decisions and recommendations of the Cabinet calling for a general mobilization to face the health emergency. Banks will provide, through their headquarters and main centers, the necessary banking services to their clients, in terms of cash withdrawals from ATMs and urgent commercial operations related to food safety and medical supplies for citizens. Moreover, these measures are fully in line with those taken by the BDL (Central Bank) that decided to close all its branches and work on a small scale, whereas the direct contact between its employees and the citizens will be limited.

As a reminder, the banking sector includes 27,000 employees who are also citizens and have the right to stay safe and maintain the safety of their families, and to stay home during this exceptional and difficult time, in accordance with the Cabinet’s decisions and the recommendations of various official authorities and bodies.
