Press Release - Condemnation of attacks on banks

January 15 2020

The Association of Banks in Lebanon deeply regrets yesterday’s traumatic events that happened in the time-honored “Hamra Street” and targeted Lebanon’s Central Bank, banks’ branches and various stores. We firmly believe that the perpetrators are not in connection with the true Lebanese rebels, but are rather a group of driven paid mobs whose objectives are known.

We hope that the honorable rebels, whom  we respect, would denounce these people who are trying to penetrate their ranks, and would not be victims of suspicious plans that aim at diverting the attention from the revolution’s real goals that primarily focus on fighting corruption and waste which are still rife in the public sector and which originally led the country and the people to the current situation.

Added to this is the substantial and irresponsible slowdown in the formation of a new government, throwing therefore the banks under the bus as if they are responsible for the deterioration of the current situation. This matter should be at the top of the priorities list, instead of attacking the banking sector that is trying hard and exerting all efforts to maintain what is left of our national economy.

We further ask the security forces to take the appropriate measures in order to identify and sue the ones who motivated, planned and contributed to these barbaric acts attacking a sector that has been doing its best to serve the people and maintain their interests during one of the worst situations Lebanon is going through.
